Fruit plays a large part in maintaining a healthy diet, but how many kids really enjoy eating it?

Fruit is really essential for a healthy body. It provides fibre and roughage to aid the digestive processes, contains many vitamins the body needs and should be a part of everyone´s five a day eating pattern.

All very interesting, but it won´t encourage your kids to eat more fruit if they turn up their noses at it in favour of potato chips or chocolate. So how can you change their view of the humble banana or peach and get them really excited and asking for more?

Well, nothing looks less exciting than an over-ripe banana sporting black patches and mouldering in the fruit bowl. Who would fancy eating that? So if you can, buy good, fresh produce regularly. Try buying a few pieces of different coloured fruit and arrange in a shiny stainless steel bowl. It needn´t cost a fortune, perhaps a couple of green, polished apples, a nice bright red one, two or three oranges, and a small bunch of grapes or cherries to top off the selection. Always place the bowl in the centre of the kitchen table, where most of the family congregate and where the kids will usually head for straight after school.

Keep an eye open for what´s in season, such as tempting strawberries, blueberries, peaches, plums or a nice big mango.

Hide the cookies, potato chips and chocolate away. If you make it difficult to find, they might just grab that all important piece of fruit first.

There are many ways to introduce fruit into your kids diet. With the breakfast cereal, or in the salad bowl, and they will feel less pressured than if you pack that boring apple into their lunch box day after day and expect them to get excited about eating it.

Buy a few interesting dessert glasses, weird shapes and colours and long handled spoons. The kids will be clamouring to eat from them.

Dig out the blender and ask them to make up their own fruit smoothie recipe. Throw in some milk, honey or plain yoghurt, get them to name their own concoction and write it down for another time. Pour into a really exotic looking glass and add a cocktail stirrer for effect.
